About Makoto
Gyotaku and nature printing allow me to be at the intersection of art, science, and the outdoors. I have tried many art mediums and nothing truly clicked until I started learning the craft of fine art gyotaku. I had only seen glances of gyotaku in Japan as record keeping purposes, and not as an art form to tell stories. I have always been fascinated by the beauty of the ocean, particularly by all the diverse array of life forms that we do not get to see day to day.
Through my art, I want to share stories from the ocean and nature, and spark your curiosity. I am privileged to live in the beautiful Pacific Northwest where I am surrounded by natural wonders.

In our busy modern lives it is easy to overlook the fact that we are interconnected by fascinating colors and intricate designs in nature. I invite you to explore and see beauty through my art.
I apprenticed under Duncan Berry of By Land By Sea By Air intensively to hone gyotaku and nature printing skills. I am eternally grateful for his generosity of passing the knowledge and wisdom to me.
